Congratulations to Dr. Sam Simon for winning yet another grant to benefit West End's music department. Dr. Simon has been awarded numerous grants each year to increase student access to a variety of instruments and other musical equipment. This Chiaha Arts Education grant will be used to purchase new podcasting equipment.

We are excited the Race Way gas station near West End has added a "spirit pump" to donate 2 cents per gallon to our school. If you are in the neighborhood and need a fill up, remember to use pump 16!

We were very proud to see so many students wearing red hats on Friday showing they have met their first reading goal of recording 750 minutes of reading in their nightly reading logs! Keep up the great work! #GrowingReadersOutWest

West End fourth graders visited Tigers for Tomorrow in Attalla, AL. They met several rescue animals that have forever homes here. They learned about animal behaviors, instincts and the differences between carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. They discussed the different roles these organisms play and talked about the flow of energy within an ecosystem. They also learned how ecosystems are greatly affected by various predators, producers, and consumers (especially humans). Some of the animals they saw were lions, tigers, ligers, bears, foxes, emu, turtles, wolves and goats!

Students are invited to participate in these fun dress-up days next week as we recognize Red Ribbon Week reminding us to Be Drug Free! Wear your "RED" on Monday (10/28).

Our West End family is humbled and honored to be voted "Best Public Elementary School" in Rome/ Floyd County again this year! We appreciate the support of our amazing families and community stakeholders! Thank you for voting for us year after year! #GrowingReadersOutWest

Fall Picture Day is TOMORROW (10/24)! This is the picture that will be used for this year's yearbook and new ID cards coming soon. Please ensure your child is present and on time.

Our first and second grade gifted students read a Scholastic article entitled Firefighter Gear where they discussed compound words, dove deeper into the gear firefighters use, and discussed many fire safety tools. They learned many new vocabulary words such as stabilizer and turnout gear. The students learned that firefighters have turnout gear that keeps them safe (they have to put on in 60 seconds) and looked at the fire truck with all of its equipment. They learned that fire safety education has decreased the number of fire-related incidents and injuries. Lastly, they talked about and practiced the STOP-DROP-and ROLL procedures. Our students enjoyed our time with these community heroes. They answered MANY questions from our very inquisitive students. #firesafety

We had a huge turnout for our annual STEM night! Thank you to our STEM Teacher, Tiffany Abbott Fuller, and WEE Parent Engagement Coordinator, Maribeth Futral, for coordinating this amazing event!
